Buildings

Larger adaptations to buildings cover a wide range of activities. Generally speaking, they
include jobs that are either too large or too involved to be undertaken quickly at
short notice by our own employees. These jobs often require planning or
design work and may require application to be made to local authorities or
charities for grant aid.
For instance. if your roof is leaking and the damp is affecting your health, the Social Services
may refer you to us so that we can manage the work. This will involve us
applying for grant aid, making plans and finding reliable contractors to tender
for the job on your behalf.
There are 3 main types of job
Disabled Facility Grants
are available to eligible people who need
equipment or alterations to deal with disabilities. Stair lifts or
special bathing arrangements are among these.
Home Improvement Grants **
are available to eligible people where the
condition of their property is risking their health or safety. An
unsafe roof or wall may be covered here.
Patch And Mend Grants **
are similar to Home Improvement Grants
except that the size and value of the work is smaller. A rotten
window frame might qualify for one of these.
These grants normally come from the District Council and eligibility is
determined by them, often on a means tested basis for older or disabled
people. Occasionally assistance can be available from certain charities.
* If you do not
qualify for grant aid, we can still manage work privately at a moderate cost.
** Important. Current spending
restrictions have affected the
availability of grants. At the moment
Disabled Facility Grants are available as normal although they may be
subject to delays. Home Improvement grants have been
suspended until further notice. Patch & Mend grants may still be
available, but usually only in cases where health and safety are known
to be at considerable risk.
